A few kilometres south of Valencia, Cullera is located at the mouth of the river Júcar and is known for its wide sandy beaches.
But there are other things to visit in Cullera besides going to the beach. The surrounding mountain ranges offer viewpoints to enjoy the sunset, there are museums and a castle where you can relive history and unique landscapes with trails to breathe fresh air.

Where to stay in Cullera
If you want to spend the night, we recommend the following alternatives to stay in Cullera:

1) The castle of Cullera
Besides the beaches, the main attraction to see in Cullera is the castle, which dates back to the 10th century. During the visit you will walk along the ancient wall that delimited the construction, where some of the defensive towers are still standing, such as Santa Ana or Reina Mora.
Its location on the top of the hill allows you to see the city, the rice fields and the sea from the top, a 360 degree experience! Inside the castle is the Municipal Museum of History and Archaeology, which is well worth a visit.
Almost next to the castle, you can also enter the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Castle, a very beautiful building both inside and out. You can buy tickets for Cullera Castle in advance here.
2) Cullera Meteorological Centre Viewpoint
It is well worth driving along the narrow, winding road to reach the viewpoint of the Cullera Meteorological Centre. The breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea coast and the town on one side, and the fields of rice and orange groves on the other, are spectacular.
To get there, you can do it by car or bicycle following the signs indicating Radar Meteorológico, although it is also possible to do it on foot along a footpath.
Our main recommendation is to visit it at sunset, when the sky turns orange and the sunset is incredible.
3) L’Estany de Cullera
Just 10 minutes drive from the city to the south, L’Estany de Cullera is a small lake that flows into the sea. It is an ideal place in the middle of nature to stroll along the paths, relax and eat in one of the restaurants with beautiful views of the pond.
In addition, the pond is renowned for bird watching and for the boats with fishermen at work. At the mouth of the pond, there are two beaches with almost no waves. Ideal to disconnect. We loved it.
4) Cave-Museum of the Pirate Dragut, things to do in Cullera with kids
Cullera has the peculiarity of housing the only museum devoted entirely to piracy. During the 16th century, the city suffered pirate attacks and Dragut was one of the protagonists who assaulted the city.
All these stories are told by the guide during the tour, which lasts about 40 minutes and is very engaging for the youngest visitors. There is also a recreation of a ship and elements of torture that were used at the time.
The museum is located in a small cave, so you have to go up and down some stairs. It is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
5) The beaches
The extensive coastline of 15 kilometres, allows Cullera to have beaches for all preferences, from the most central and crowded to the more distant ones, ideal places to practice water sports.
The city beach is San Antonio, which is obviously very busy in summer, although as it is a long sandy area you will not find very large crowds. It has also a long promenade for walking.
If you want less crowded beaches, the alternative is to go to the area of the cape of Cullera. Here you will find Cap Blanc beach and l’Illa beach, a very family-friendly beach with calm, crystal-clear water.
6) Cullera Lighthouse Viewpoint
At one end of Cape Cullera there is a white lighthouse which is not possible to enter for a closer look. But just a few metres away, you can enjoy the beautiful views from the viewpoint, located above the hermitage of San Fermín.
7) Cullera Market
Cullera market is open from Monday to Saturday. This building housesseveral food stalls, cafes and bars, and even a shop selling local produce. It also has a cultural hall, auditorium and the Spanish Civil War air raid shelter which can be visited.
If you visit the Cullera market on Thursday mornings, you will find the Cullera street market, a tradition that has been going on for seven centuries.
8) Boat trip on the Júcar river
One of the best activities to do in Cullera is to sail in a typical boat of the area called barquet albuferenc. This type of boat is designed to travel in shallow waters and is used by the fishermen of the lagoon.
Where to eat in Cullera
- El Rincon del Faro: One of the best places to eat in Cullera. Dishes with a great elaboration, an exemplary service and perfect flavour.
- La Perla Negra: bar for a snack accompanied by a beer or an aperitif. Spectacular atmosphere and views of Cap Blanc beach.
- Bariloche: One of the best beachfront restaurants in Cullera with terrace. Generous portions, homemade and fresh produce, extensive menu and excellent service.
- Restaurante Bar Pescadores: specialising in fish, prawns, seafood and fried food, is in the centre of the city, on the banks of the river Júcar.
